Nafplio is a picturesque coastal town in the Peloponnese region, known for its historical significance, stunning architecture and fascinating sights. As one of the oldest cities in Greece, Nafplio not only has a rich history to tell, but also offers a perfect mix of culture, nature and gastronomy. Especially for travelers who are interested in history while also wanting to enjoy a relaxing holiday, Nafplio is an absolute must-see. I was lucky enough to experience this beautiful town for a day and would recommend a visit again and again!
Story
Nafplio has a long and varied history dating back to ancient times. The city was originally an important port city in ancient Greece and played a central role in various historical periods. It was a strategically important location, especially in the Middle Ages and modern times. In the 19th century it was briefly the first capital of modern Greece (1833–1834), before Athens took over this role.
The city was under Venetian rule and also Turkish control, among others, which significantly influenced its architecture and culture. This mix of different influences is still visible in the city today and makes Nafplio a fascinating destination for visitors who want to experience both the ancient and more recent chapters of Greek history.
landmarks and sights
Nafplio is rich in impressive landmarks that are closely linked to the city's history. Two particularly striking buildings are the Palamidi Fortress and the Bourtzi.
Palamidi Fortress
The Palamidi Fortress is undoubtedly one of Nafplio's most famous landmarks. It was built by the Venetians in the 17th century on a hill above the city and served as a strategic defense. The fortress offers spectacular views of the city, the sea and the surrounding mountains. The architecture of the fortress is particularly impressive, with its massive walls and towers that blend perfectly into the landscape. To reach the fortress, you have to climb 999 steps. Today, you can also just drive up, unless you want to integrate your workout into the excursion. Whichever way you get there, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view. For history buffs, the Palamidi Fortress is a fascinating example of Venetian military architecture.
It was also in this fortress that the Greek national hero Theodoros Kolokotronis was imprisoned by the royal authorities in 1834 during the early years of Greek independence. Kolokotronis had played a key role in the war of liberation against the Ottoman Empire, but after the war he came into conflict with the new government and was captured. Today his cell can be visited there.
The fortress is really worth a visit. To make sure you have a good memory of the experience, there are a few things you should keep in mind. I definitely recommend wearing sturdy shoes! The stones are quite slippery in many places. The ground in the more remote part of the fortress, away from the paved paths, consists in many places of just earth, rocks and rubble. You should always watch your step. It is also important to wear a hat on sunny days - do you need a sun hat? Then just click here !
Bourtzi
Another important landmark of Nafplio is Bourtzi, a small fortress island in the Gulf of Nafplio. This fortress was built by the Venetians in the 15th century and served as a watchtower to control the port. At one point, the fortress served as a luxury hostel for the wealthy elite of the country and abroad. Today, Bourtzi is a popular tourist destination that can be reached by boat from the city. The views of the city and the surrounding coast from Bourtzi are simply breathtaking, and the island itself offers a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for a little exploration. At Bourtzi itself, you can learn much more about the history of the small fortress and its restoration.
Further discoveries
Nafplio offers its visitors numerous other sights and activities. The charming old town with its narrow, cobbled streets, Venetian houses and neoclassical buildings invites you to stroll and explore. The streets and alleys are full of life and offer a variety of cafes, restaurants, boutiques and museums.
Another highlight is Syntagma Square, which, with its impressive neoclassical buildings and the beautiful Governor's Palace, is an ideal place to enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
For art lovers, there is the National Museum of Greek Art and the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio, where you can admire interesting finds from the ancient past of the city and the region.
Restaurant tip – Pidalio Tavern
Nafplio is also a wonderful place for foodies. The town is particularly famous for its fresh seafood and fish dishes, which come straight from the Gulf of Nafplio. A recommended restaurant in this regard is the award-winning Pidalio Tavern, which is popular with locals and tourists alike. In this traditional Greek tavern, great emphasis is placed on the freshness of the ingredients and the fish dishes are excellently prepared. From grilled fish to seafood and traditional Greek specialties, at Pidalio Tavern you can enjoy the best flavors of the region. The cozy tavern is a little hidden away, you can't expect a sea view, but you can expect great food.
I had a very tasty traditional fish soup at Pidalio, which was very similar to my grandma's! The fresh fish is great for sharing, and you should always ask for the daily fresh starter.
